War of 1812

The War of 1812 - History

History

This section will evolve showing the chronology of the war and include its relevance to our area.

Example of Events

War has been declared on Canada

(known as Upper Canada back then) June 18, 1812

General Brock crosses Brants fording place

(near present day Lorne Bridge) in 1813 on his way to Fort Detroit.

Massive retreat across the Grand River

General Proctor followed by Tecumseh's warriors cross the Grand on their way to Fort York (present day Toronto)

Six Nations declare war

Six Nations once again align themselves with their long time allies the British against invading American forces.

Invasion of Six Nations 1814

Not since the American Revolution had their territory been aggressively attacked. Their strategic position in Upper Canada is both a blessing and a curse. McArthur with hundreds of mounted soldiers penetrates Six Nations Territory right up to the west side of the Grand River. Fighting ensues. Warriors stalk them on the east side as the horde of mounted Americans move slowly south. (The details are quite amazing).
